The term “surname” is not synonymous with “family name” and carries historical and legal meanings that differ from each other.
In Stratton v. Foster (11 Me. 467), the Court distinguished the “Christian name” from the “surname” as a separate legal addition, not merely a descriptor of family heritage. By contrast, “family name” refers solely to lineage and does not carry the same statutory or jurisdictional implications.
